The most surprising thing about LADY OF BURLESQUE was that it got made at all. Burlesque was all but listless by 1942, shut out of most towns and cities by relentless true crusaders, and Hollywood itself was mired in the imperfect “production code,” which do a heavy lid on what could and could not be shown on conceal. But burlesque had spawned a number of stars who remained favorites with public, and in 1941 the legendary Gypsy Rose Lee penned a book called THE G-STRING MURDERS. It proved extremely accepted, and a year later United Artists took a chance on the film project.

True enough, the movie couldn’t prove the strippers in action or play out the bawdy comical sketches so favorite in burlesque, but writer James Gunn turned in a trustworthy script, and director William Wellman and his cast gave the whole thing mountainous swagger and style. The result was a movie that captured the seedy, underworld-edged world of burlesque without actually causing censors to yank it from distribution.

In theory, LADY OF BURLESQUE is a execute mystery, but mystery takes a abet seat to the brawling backstage antics of crossed appreciate affairs and star rivalry. Barbara Stanwyck endows star stripper “Dixie Daisy” with her believe memorable stamp of tough class–and although she can only be shown from the waist up when she bumps and grinds, she unexcited manages to journey strips off her musical number “Play It On The G-String.” The rest of the cast is equally memorable, many of them burlesque stars in their absorb lawful. Pinky Lee (Mandy) is memorably teamed with Marion Martin (Alice Angle) to toothsome effect; Iris Adrian (Gee-Gee) is the gum smacking brash blonde to extinguish all gum smacking brash blondes; and such memorable character actors as Michael O’Shea (Biff), Gloria Dickson (Dolly), and J. Edward Bromberg (Foss) round out the cast superbly.

Sad to say, LADY OF BURLESQUE has fallen into public domain, and it has not been well preserved. I have seen several releases of the film, and all of them are plagued with breaks in the film and the soundtrack. This particular DVD release, however, is definitely “as noble as it gets;” unlike some other versions, the represent is challenging and positive and the sound is extremely respectable. LADY OF BURLESQUE may never be regarded as a “astronomical” film, but it is an extremely spicy one, particularly for those who already know something about the now-lost world of burlesque. As one character says, “Makes me want to leave the wife!” Recommended.

GFT, Amazon Reviewer

Yes, Barbara Stanwyck sings and dances in her very first scene in the backstage myth of burlesque performers interested in kill called LADY OF BURLESQUE. Based on Gypsy Rose Lee’s comic, charming new “The G-String Murders,” the movie is a guilty pleasure for me. I have never stopped loving it since the first time I saw it. Stanwyck is, to me, one of the best actors Hollywood has ever produced: top of the line in comedy (seek THE LADY EVE) and in serious drama (peer DOUBLE INDEMNITY) . Inspect her tame Gary Cooper in BALL OF FIRE and yell along with her in STELLA DALLAS. William Wellman who also directed grand films such as WINGS, PUBLIC ENEMY AND BEAU GESTE has a stunning time with the various backstage types in this grainy shadowy and white tribute to a uninteresting art produce.

There has never really been a perfect edition of the movie for public consumption. I’ve even seen an edition minus any credits whatsoever and usually the editing seems like it was done with a pinking shears. This DVD version is probably the best one can hold just now and there are no special features, unless you believe Stanwyck performing “Steal It Off The E String–Play It On The G String” a special feature. It is. She bumps, she grinds and the camera stays chastely above her waist.

There are several musical numbers and a few comical sketches that give us a taste of what burlesque must have been. The supporting cast is terrific. It includes Pinky Lee as a droll, Iris Adrian as a tough but satisfactory stripper and Michael O’Shea as Stanwyck’s treasure interest. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for display business fans. If you’re looking for a qualified execute mystery, spy elsewhere.

Film versions of novels rarely regain everything proper but this comes elegant terminate. I especially like how effective the film is at conveying the importance of the body and physical sensation so considerable in Lawrence’s writing. I mediate a film can only attempt to present what the book more specifically says so to the mind the book will always be preferred but with a writer like Lawrence film makes perfect sense. In fact Lawrences flaw is perhaps that he at times uses too many words when an image would suffice. So I appreciate that someone as visually mettlesome as Ken Russell made this film. I’ve seen it many times and always cherish different things about it. Russell is usually equated with excess but here everything exists in fair the moral amount, nothing is overdone, he finds honest the legal scheme to advise literary mumble without overly revering it and so framing it too neatly. Russell remains correct to the book, and to his credit the contrivance he injects the Lawrentian themes enlivens his characters, compose them seem even more critical which is no microscopic accomplishment and so the film never feels “literary” even though it is very literary in the best sense. To Lawrence treasure and any kind of relationship was always marked with struggle and restlessness because it could never be perfected. He was not alive to in the bourgeoisie convention of marriage which domesticated esteem into something else but in its truest most uncompromised residence. So in this film Ken Russell gives us that. Not every detail of the whole sage but the famous feeling of care for as experienced by four very different temperaments and all four main characters are very different types indeed, and all react differently to passion and elaborate its meaning differently also. The most blooming scenes are the wordless ones when the characters cessation analyzing what their lives are about and allow themselves to simply inhabit their fill passion and instincts. I mediate Russell is very accurate to Lawrence’s concerns, perhaps shares them, but articulates them in his maintain visual plan which really makes this a kind of collaboration with Lawrence as some of the scenes have no precedent in the book. The characters all remain complex and entertaining and grand remains unresolved because it is unresolvable. He also did a version of Women in Love’s companion current The Rainbow which is only about half as generous.

One of the most handsome films and most sensuous ever made. I rented “Women in Fancy” years ago over and over again, until I gave up and finally bought a copy. I have grown attached to this film. Glenda Jackson deservedly won oscar for her portrayal as Gudrun. Cinematographer should have won too for his fine photography.

When discussing this film with other film buffs, they withhold mentioning the “most” knowing scene, the nude scene with Alan Bates and Oliver Reed. I agree it’s gleaming and exotic, but there are others that are dazzling, delicate and unforgettable: 1) Jennie Linden’s nude scene with Alan Bates, circling gracefully around one another in a field while a fair net of music plays in the background. 2) Jackson’s dance and pleasing movement while reaching for a tree branch and slowly descending to the ground and encourage again, while Linden sings “Blooming Bubbles”. 3) Linden’s reconciliation with Bates starting with “Peruse what a flower I found you? ” 4) Jackson’s blooming elongated eyes gradual a camouflage putting on a costume in Switzerland while having an affair and Stravinsky plays in the background.

No matter how many times I gape this film, I accept fresh delicate discoveries. I pledge people to give this one a chance and I promise it will be worth while and rewarding.

This movie is spot in contemporary London and its account revolves around the life of playboy Will Freeman (Hugh Grant) . Freeman is an independent man who enjoys a late life carved into careful sections. His friends net him desperately lonely and unfulfilled, a idea he entirely disregards. Whilst trying to come by creative modern ways to meet single women for casual relationships, he meets a boy named Marcus (Nicholas Hoult) . Marcus is the misfit at his school, overburdened by his freethinking and chronically melancholy mother, Fiona (Toni Collette) . Freeman and Marcus forge an unlikely but salubrious bond that transposes their generation gap and differences. Culminating in a hilarious school music performance, the two leer novel ways to navigate a changing world and terms in which to redefine the meaning of family.

Saturated by the fantastic music of Badly Drawn Boy, this is an enduring and appetizing comedy. Hugh Grant’s character of the prankish unlikely hero seems ideally helpful to him. Collette’s performance as a seeming shallow liberal is wonderfully dynamic, bringing depth and heart to the character. The film tackles many social issues, especially problems of male (father-son) relations, from a compelling point of belief. It’s a characterize of recent England that burrows into the largely untapped life of this spellbinding country. The horribly undeveloped and unrealistic character of the rebellious teenage girl with whom Marcus becomes smitten is the only station where this film really lacks. Otherwise it is a pleasure to look.

Heartwarming studio chickflick about Hugh Grant bonding with a puny boy…this description didn’t send me rushing to the cinema, despite the Carve Hornsby sign. But shockingly, About a Boy isn’t a standard Hollywood prefab romcom or sentimental twaddle — it’s an sincere film, sharply written, evocatively directed, beautifully acted.

The caustic British wit immediately sets the film apart from its studio comedy brethren — its actually, frequently droll. The characters feel dependable, lived in. The marvelous dual voiceover is potent rebuke to those calm peddling the convential wisdom that vo’s are “uncinematic” (if this includes you you’re immediately assigned “Election” and “Adaptation”), working comfortably inside our protagonists’ heads without any dreaded ‘literary’ staining, bringing their vibrant inner lives to silly life.

So instead of the counterfeit life lessons and maudlin sentimentality films of this sort so often trade in, we win a curious, witty myth about…okay, yeah…Hugh Grant bonding with a runt boy. But that’s no reason not to rent it.

The widescreen relate is attractive (another nice departure from drearily filmed studio comedies) and the disc comes with numerous, lengthy deleted scenes that are virtually all terrific, and well worth viewing.

Few directors if any have the audacity or imagination to gain such cinema. It takes a good visionary to craft a film of this caliber, the one that defies all norms and standards popular by the general mainstream. L’Amour Braque was written by a legendary French poet/songwriter Etienne Roda-Gil who also wrote the libretto for an opera about the French revolution, Ça Ira (`There is Hope’), for which Roger Waters of Pink Floyd wrote the music. That combined with Zulawski’s fluid style of filmmaking where camera is always floating in the air makes L’Amour Braque pure “Poetry In Motion”, this is not your typical lovey dovey artsy-fartsy French cinema, if anything Zulawski’s films are always opposite of that. This film brings out the beauty in French language and how poetic it could be. The actors in Zulawski films never ACT FRENCH, something that Zulawski and Sophie Marceau both address in the interviews and the commentary. L’Amour Braque is what made Sophie Marceau the star that she is today even though the truly deserved credit has never been given to Zulawski, thankfully she is humble enough to admit that herself. L’Amour Braque is arguably Zulawski’s most coarse film probably 1 notch above “Possession” and equal to that of “Szamanka”. The opening scene of the film alone is worth the notice of the DVD; it is arguably the greatest monologue in the history of cinema.

The observation by Etienne Roda-Gil pleasing mighty sums up this film and what Zulawski’s cinema is all about “Zulawski’s films don’t talk about cherish. They produce savor.”

Just a few years assist I never dreamed that any ticket would do justice to any Zulawski films, the only legitimate release was the now OOP DVD of POSSESSION from 2000, after that all we got was crappy bootlegs of his Polish Films by Polart and that unofficial release of “My Nights Are Graceful Than Your Days” that has been in print forever. Then comes Mondo Vision who have gone all the method with their 3 releases so far and they have outdone themselves time after time. This is probably the most graceful DVD package any film has ever received and one that truly deserves the effect “Cramped Edition”. Where companies like Anchorbay ruined the whole conception of Exiguous Edition by making tens of thousands of copies of their so called LEs, Mondo have been consistent so far and each of their Premium Editions is cramped only to 2000 numbered copies, something extremely famous to any collector especially for such “Cult” titles. If Criterion’s OOP “Salo” DVD was selling for $900+, this one will be worth ten times that when it’s Sold Out!

Mondo’s 3 releases so far have been exemplary in every position including A/V presentation and L’Amour Braque is no exception. Watching this on a Sony BD Player connected to a Pioneer Plasma brings out some Incredible details and moments of film like greatness. On some close-ups you may even deem you are watching a BD, can’t imagine how Mondo’s BDs will examine like if they go that route someday. The image and the subtitles are current by Zulawski. As far as the extras, don’t miss out on Zulawski’s commentary and Sophie Marceau and Archival Footage Interviews. Some may not know this but L’Amour Braque was the film where Zulawski and Sophie Marceau met, they were married for 17 years, have 1 son named Vincent, and made 4 films together.

…And so we have “Mansfield Park”, “loosely” based on the Jane Austen modern of same name (although, as is mentioned in the credits, Austen’s letters and non-fiction writings are also venerable, particularly for dialogue) . The characters sustain their unique names, but, for the most allotment, not their personalities. The heroine, Fanny Trace, is changed from the peaceful, deeply legal character of the book into a feisty tomboy. The anecdote follows the basic threads of the original, but adds several subplots and individual scenes that you are not likely to rep in any Austen unusual (Fanny’s uncle giving her the once over, Mary Crawford giving her the once over, etc.) . So why the four stars?

Well, as an adaptaion, the film only merits two at best. But taken by itself and judged as a movie, I have to admit it’s quite gripping. While not the Fanny of the book, as played by Frances O’Conner the Fanny of the film is extremely likable. Embeth Davidtz and the very involving Alessandro Nivola have a lot of fun with their characters; Nivola in particular capturing the mixture of sleaziness and vulnerablity that makes the womanizing Henry Crawford ever so slightly magnificent. The visuals are sumptuous, and the dialogue is laced with Austen’s modern wit, considerable of it not in the new. My only sincere problems with the film are with the slavery subplot (icky and distracting) and Johnny Lee Miller as Fanny’s correct fancy. Changing the chracters personalities also changes their motivations, and the actions of Edward, while making sense in the book, are not logical in the film. As a result, Miller’s Edward comes off as wimpy and indecisive and detracts from the epic.

Other than these two quibbles, I quite like this cramped movie. You are more likely to relish it, I judge, if you aren’t comparing it to the unique the entire time, as it really has very tiny to do with Austen’s narrative. Taken as a straight period film, though, “Mansfield Park” is an palatable method to exercise a rainy afternoon.

This movie SEEMS to be Mansfield Park. The characters have all the fair names, the action has a superficial resemblance to that of the original, but there all similarities ruin!

This is a very unusual Mansfield Park, regardless of the early 19th century setting. Viewers are caught up in a anecdote of the evils of slavery and the value of women’s scholarship. Not exactly the focus of the recent!

Buy,Download, Or Stream Mansfield Park! Click Here

There are some redeeming features. The costuming is beautiful; Mr. Rushworth, Julia, and Maria are gratifyingly self-absorbed and absurd; the differences between the Notice and Bertram households are well-drawn. Austen fans will savor quotes from Fanny’s writing: they are taken from the early stories of Austen herself.

However, the makers of this movie have made Fanny Mark a very different sort of creature from the recent. Elegant and heavenly, sometimes sharp-tongued, she has minute in current with the character in the unique.

The director has chosen to introduce elements not prove in the new. Sir Thomas, for example, due to a family business in trading slaves (never mentioned in the modern), has gone from a dignified, rather stuffy but capable man in the original, to a degraded and rather disturbing man in the film. In the movie, he looks Fanny up and down as if she is a slave for sale, and arranges the renowned ball of the new as a intention of “selling” her in marriage. And having brought in the anti-slavery subplot, the director simply dismisses it at the slay, saying “Sir Thomas eventually gave up his interests in Antigua.”

Buy,Download, Or Stream Mansfield Park! Click Here

Sharply lacking is any of the satiric gaze Austen cast on society. We are given the melodrama, but itsy-bitsy of Austen’s inviting wit. Very few of Aunt Norris’ snobby ways have made it into the movie; the vast scenes enthralling the “improvements” at Sotherton are missing. Fanny’s brother William is missing entirely.

Why bother to even mention this is based on an Austen unique? There is small enough resemblance.

And now on to the movie itself – a political thriller area in London in the 1960s, when tensions between East and West were at a uncertain high. The dwelling revolves around Sir James Quentin, the Australian high commissioner to London, played with elegance and style by Christopher Plummer, who is the chairman of an international conference that attempts to bridge political divides through trade. “Peace through plenty” is how one of the conference participants puts it. But although Sir Quentin is quite successful in his negotiations, not all is well. Someone halt to him is leaking confidential information, trying to discredit the conference. Black assasins have an gape on the commissioner and the politics around the conference are a tangled web.

On top of that, in the middle of the conference sergeant detective Scobie Malone (a enormous tough-but-good-guy portrait by Rod Taylor) flies in from Australia, sent by Quentin’s political rival, the premier of Unique South Wales, to arrest him for the alleged kill of his conventional wife. But did he do it? Malone himself and his boss at the CID don’t believe so. The inquiry was made by the politically motivated premier’s people and not by the CID. However, a mandate of arrest was issued and Malone is supposed to bring the commissioner aid to Australia. Quentin asks for more time to achieve the conference – a few days that gaze two assasination attempts, Malone becoming Quentin’s private security agent, and endless deception and intrigue, spearheaded by the charming and uncertain Maria Cholon, an underworld queen who has an interest in seeing Quentin dull and the conference aborted. I won’t enlighten you how it all ends because thrillers you know the ending of beforehand aren’t that noteworthy fun ;) .

Although the tone of the movie is mostly serious, there are enough moments of levity provided by the interactions between true-blue Australian Malone and Sir Quentin’s stuffy British butler Joseph, delightfully played by Clive Revill. Cast performances are gracious across the board, including Lilli Palmer as Sir Quentin’s sensitive, terrorized wife (Lilli Palmer and Christopher Plummer had played another ill-fated couple before: she had played Jocasta to his Oedipus in “Oedipus King”) . Camilla Sparv plays Sir Quentin’s quick-witted, racy and protective secretary with unbiased the moral combination of professionalism and feistiness. Daliah Lavi is suitably langurous, seductive and revengeful as the “horrible beauty”, and Burt Kwouk of “Pink Panther” series fame makes an appearance as her lieutenant.

As for the DVD quality, the video is crisp and beautifully toned, considerable improved over the VHS version which is out of print now (under the name “Nobody Runs Forever”) . The sound is Dolby mono but of advantageous quality.

Based on the current eponymous recent by Jon Cleary. Recommended!

This is a political thriller that adds an venerable destroy to the mix to perform a movie that’s intriguing but not quite as top-notch as I’d hoped for. Aussie cop Scobie Malone (Rod Taylor) is sent to London to arrest and bring wait on for trial the Australian High Commissioner Sir James Quentin (Christopher Plummer), who is in the midst of crucial negotiations with some third world countries. Malone’s boss believes there is now enough evidence against Sir James to pin on him the slay of his first wife which happened several years ago. When Malone arrives in London, however, he finds Sir James to be the target of assassins who are distinct to sight the negotiations fail. At the same time, he comes to contain that it’s possible Sir James wasn’t the murderer after all. Sir James pleads for time to complete the negotiations and Malone agrees, but then finds himself in the state of having to protect Sir James from the assassins.

Rod Taylor does a elegant job playing Malone, a full, straightforward cop. Malone also is smarter than many people at first ask him to be. Christopher Plummer turns in another polished performance as the high commissioner, a man dedicated to the talks, in esteem with his second wife and with enough steel in him that you’re not positive whether he is a killer or not. Lili Palmer, one of my current actors, as Lady Quentin is delicate and fragile, and may have secrets of her enjoy.

The assassinate myth is really background to the thriller tale, but I wish it had been more heavily emphasized. It would have made for a grand more complex film. On balance, though, the movie is worth watching. The DVD transfer is a dinky soft and the audio should have been tweaked up. That, combined with the Australian accents, at times requires careful listening.

If you like reading mysteries, I’d recommend the book by Jon Cleary that this film was made from. Its modern title was Nobody Runs Forever, but was reissued as The High Commissioner when the movie came out. Malone appears in a number of Cleary’s books. One I like a lot is Helga’s Web.

When I was a kid I admit to giving the second series of “Star Blazers” a pass. I watched it once, then waited patiently for “The Quest for Iscandar” episodes to launch again. I deem I now understand why. While the first series gave me an emitonally nostalgic buzz, it is a fairly simple and straight-forward chronicle filled with gargantuan ideas and outstanding concepts that are easier for kids to digest. But with “The Comet Empire” the characters are so well-developed and the plotting so intricate that when I was young it was simply too mighty information. Today, however, I pick this series for a multitude of reasons. The most noticable incompatibility is that the animation has improved ten-fold! There are many scenes throughout the series that rival current-day anime. While “The Quest for Iscandar” was loaded with stout ideas, the plotting sometimes took a backseat to inspiration. But here the record is more fluid and diverse, with keen sub-plots, and with even more astronomical ideas. While the first series concentrated on introducing the main characters and developing depth of character, this second series expands on those characteristics while giving more screen-time to the rest of the cast. Sandor and Orion and Enthusiastic and Homer all catch more attention, as do the newer characters, like the luminous Sgt. Knox and his Situation Marines; the charming Leader Desslok makes his return, as well. As an adult, I be pleased “The Comet Empire” more for the simple fact that there is more going on. Aboard the war machine that is “The Comet Empire” there is devious behavior and political maneuvering, with distinct individuals vying for the throne. While at Earth Headquarters, the actions of The Star Force are taken as mutiny at first, but later embraced as their last defense. The complexity of emotion and spot kept me eager all the arrangement to the raze. This wasn’t the nostalgia-rush I got from the first series, but seriously, everything else here is an improvement. Although, I collected gave “The Quest for Iscandar” 5 stars. This is easily one of the best tantalizing series of all-time, and I highly recommend both series. “The Quest for Iscandar” for unbridled nostalgia, and “The Comet Empire” for an suited adventure epic.

Like everyone else who worships this series, I too lived and breathed Star Blazers in my youth. Factual after school, at 3:30 on Channel 11 (but occasionally in the morning at 7:00), was my time to bag lost in another world. In fact I vividly occupy my mother, during the show’s morning performances, waking me up for school by turning on my tiny sunless and white tv, and I would be roused from my slumber to the theme song: “We’re off to outer spot…” What a astronomical design to launch a day! I wander up unprejudiced thinking about it. And of course my friends and I would discuss that day’s episode at school. Unforgettable, irreplacable memories.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Star Blazers – Comet Empire! Click Here

Growing up has not lessened the experience one iota, since Star Blazers contains all the drama and excitement of any adult tv present, without the language and nudity (though apparently some skin existed in the recent Japanese version) . The character development is staggering (due to the extraordinary thunder actors) ; the frustration of loss and the elation of victory is palpable.

I choose the Comet Empire Series only slightly more than the Iscandar series because the artwork is a runt better, though neither of them have truly terrible artwork. It’s not the hi-tech fresh anime that we’re veteran to now, but rather the acorn from which it grew. The scene at the beginning of the series where the Star Force is gathered at Captain Avatar’s Memorial and the current Andromeda battleship flies toward them covered in lights was quite an advanced share of work for the time, but that sort of technique wasn’t feeble often in the series.

The dvd extras with the fresh grunt actors is too expedient to be legal, and it’s a shame they weren’t obsolete on the Bolar Wars series. I will not survey it due to that cramped detail. It honest isn’t the same. Wildstar, Venture, Nova, Sandor, Conroy, Orion, et al. are forever to be associated with the voices from the first 2 series.

Even though I realize the Argo should have been destroyed 100 times over with the hurt it received (especially from the Comet Empire’s “hidden” ship), I will not let that minor technicality sway my belief of this grand, luminous, entertaining epic. The music is ample, the allege actors gain you truly feel finish to the characters, and the drama and heroism is unmatched by any other “mere cartoon”.

My 5-year-old son is a 3-D learner (dyslexic) and I was having anxiety getting him fervent in reading or writing. Since he’s started watching Wordworld he and his 3-year-old sister race around the house shouting and dancing “It’s time to perform a word”. Next we rush and net our letters and originate words. Now words and letters are fun and absorbing to him. The most distinguished aspect to this point to for my son is that it gives him a 3-D plan of letters and words and at the same time gives him the record to go with it.(most Dyslexics reflect in pictures only – if there’s no represent for it they’re stumped) Aside from that the characters and stories are very inviting. I get myself clearing my schedule to survey Wordworld. It is also respectable for me to search for it with them because then later we go over the concepts taught and re-build the words. They don’t even know they’re “learning”

This is, in my conception, the BEST kids’ present to approach around in a very, very long time. It helps kids view their letters, sound out words, and spell, which I relish. However, learning aside- this note is wonderful. It is HILARIOUS, the characters are well-developed and lovable, and the quality is improbable.

The second disc starts off with the impressive “I Am Iron Man,” a 108 tiny making of documentary that can be viewed in seven segments or altogether, taking us through various aspects of the production. For example, we are taken step-by-step through the construction of the Iron Man armor with Robert Downey Jr. cracking jokes while being fitted for it. It’s fabulous how grand of the suit is practical and looks really superior in person. This is due in broad fraction to the genius of the late-great Stan Winston and his company. Also included is plenty of soundstage footage of scenes being filmed.

“The Invincible Iron Man” is a six-part documentary on the laughable book, tracing the history of the character. Stan Lee says that he modeled Stark after Howard Hughes, for the most share. He also mentions that he was never fully tickled with the spy of the armor – hence its many changes over the years. This doc also covers various key characters and storylines in qualified detail with several people who worked on the title over the years talking about their contribution to the mythos. This is a very well done overview of the amusing book.

“Wired: The Visual Effects of Iron Man” examines the CGI work that went into realizing Iron Man’s powers, like flying, his repulsors, and so on. Director Jon Favreau says that he likes to spend practical effects whenever possible, which is wonderfully refreshing to hear, and in this film he mixed the practical with CGI.

“Robert Downey Jr. Mask Test.” Incredibly, the actor had to do a camouflage test because the studio deemed him a uncertain proposition and this footage shows that he had a handle on the character very early on.

“The Actor’s Process” features tantalizing footage of Jeff Bridges and Downey rehearsing a scene with Favreau. It’s mountainous to contemplate these guys at work and offers insight into how they build together a scene from the film from an acting point-of-view.

“The Onion’s Wildly Common Iron Man Trailer to be Adapted into Full-Length Film” is a laughable satire where a newscaster “breaks” a legend of how the Iron Man trailer will be made into a film that pokes fun at the rabid nature of the hardcore fanbase of the character.

Finally, there are “Galleries,” featuring opinion art, technology stills, behind-the-scenes photographs, and poster art.

There was a broad request notice looming over the theatrical adaptation of Marvel’s Iron Man property. It was in the guise of director Jon Favreau. Now, don’t obtain me snide, I appreciate the Favs, but when I heard he was helming a spacious budget droll book flick…let’s fair say I was a limited insecure. Once his cast was position and the fanboys started humming across the internet I started to ease into the decision with high anticipation. Thankfully, after finally seeing the finished product, I was not disappointed in the least. With a tall mix of the professionalism and stakes seen in both Spider-Man and X-Men and the silly wit and sheer fun of Wonderful Four, Iron Man shows how a amusing can be brought to the veil successfully without all the added drama and weight. We finally have a film with the essence of what makes these describe books so favorite, the action and mythology along with a sense of adventure and humor. Favreau never bogs us down with overwrought emotions nor speaks down to us with gags and poorly written jokes. Instead he delivers on his promises and gives us a solid initiation into what could be a titanic trilogy or more.

Favreau seems to have had an conception to obtain an origin chronicle out while not monotonous us with long drawn out support chronicle. His ability to give us dual information at once is nicely orchestrated, showing Tony Stark in his basement creating while the TV in the background explains what is happening in the outside world of the Middle East and inside his hold company. We as an audience are allowed to do the pieces together amidst the witty banter of Stark and the extraordinary special effects. By the destroy of the film it is quite extraordinary how distinguished information you will realize you now know, all culminating in a decent final battle, but more importantly a segue into the inevitable sequel. We are allowed entrance into the character evolution of Stark as he goes from war profiteer to man of action and cause, all while seeing the technology improve and approach before our eyes. Mighty like Batman, we have a hero here that needs befriend in fighting crime. He has no superhuman abilities besides his brain and being able to explore his thoughts go from paper to reality is a feat of magic. Every stage is shown, every failure and success. It’s quite the straggle in and of itself, but when you add onto it the threat of global war and destruction, it can only regain better.

The dependable success here is in the dauntless disappear of casting an actor over-40 to be a superhero. This takes guts, because no matter how appropriate it is, most studios would have said, “no, change the fable and construct him younger so we can churn out as many of these babies as we can.” I don’t know how he did it, but Favreau got Marvel to gather Robert Downey Jr. to play Stark, a sarcastic Lothario with the brain capacity of Einstein. I truly can’t deem of anyone better kindly to the role and he proves it by nailing every single scene. I’m positive there was some ad-libbing, but even if not, his funny delivery and ability to switch on a dime to a genuine seriousness at will shows his masterful craft.

As for the rest of the cast, they all do well. Jeff Bridges plays the bombastic creature of villainy over-the-top, but appropriately so; Terrence Howard is nice as the friend and military liaison, not given considerable to do, but definitely sowing seeds for the future; and Gwyneth Paltrow is salubrious as the sweet assistant Pepper Potts who at times seems a runt underwritten and more female prop than anything else, but comes through with some nice moments in a very droll sort of plan. I also really liked Shaun Toub as Yinsen, Stark’s savior, and Clark Gregg as the head of S.H.I.E.L.D. Beneficial to look Favreau giving another actor turned director props, (Gregg’s directorial debut comes out later this year in the earn of Chuck Palahniuk’s Choke) . I honest wish he would have shied away from putting himself in the film. It’s one thing to be seen split-second, (like Stan Lee), but its another to give yourself a thankless role with multiple scenes, honest adding fuel to the fire on people’s opinions of egotism stemming from the drinking game created off of the TV demonstrate “Dinner for Five” and how many references to Swingers was made each episode. I’ll forgive, though, because, once again, I’m a expansive fan.

One can’t forget that this is an action film above all else, so we can’t honest praise the actors; every execute is also quite shiny. Those scenes of Iron Man flying amongst fighter jets in the trailer seemed really lame, but when in context they stammer. The suit itself is improbable as well, through every mach stage factual to the destroy. My main highlight, however, was with the computer systems that Stark utilizes. The multiple screens, instant holographic reproductions, and ability to actually interact with those 3D representations is heavenly. We can produce them in fantasy, but it’s objective too unpleasant we can’t yet in exact life.

Now Iron Man is not a perfect film, nor even a perfect amusing book adaptation. What it is, though, is a fun, humorous actioner that should light up the box office. The final showdown is a bit of a whimper in comparison to the relieve tale and machine creation; a crucial element is saved from destruction in the one contrived bit of mask writing, (not quite utilized in the contrivance I conception, although calm for the same means) ; and some moments seem a tad campy rather than witty, but otherwise this is some topnotch cinema that should definitely be seen on the expansive cover. I can’t wait to gape how the fable progresses in a couple years.
